I love the sea. Taking a ferry in the archipelago of Oslo is one of my favorite summer treats. Now winter is here and soon it will be covered in snow and ice, allowing me to take walks from island to island. But one thing is missing: The smell of the ocean. The mix of sea, salt, plants and the wood and tar from the boats. Luckily for me I have GANT Pour Homme. It really captures the fragrance of the coast and gives me a boost of energy on a cold winter morning!

Well, almost...The D&G boys this season are a bunch of varsity guys on acid flushed down with Coke. Great fun and as always ahead of the pack. The collection´s main color orange was all over the runways for S/S 2012, so be a trendsetter and opt for these cheap offerings from H&M (I know...again you say...Their website just makes this whole sourcing images thing so easy. As an American brand filtered through British mod-punk culture of the 60s and 70s, Farah Vintage is today a hit with it´s no frills approach to casual menswear with a slim fit and vintage vibe.
Their A/W 2011 collection features sombre but striking colors and is bang on trend with striped knits, cotton anoraks, carrot fit trousers and Oxford shirts

It´s no secret I´m a HUGE fan of Original Penguin. The American brand gets better and better every season and are becoming a powerplayer in the world of highstreet menswear. They have done denim for some time, but these days they are re-launhing their line of jeans with four new fits: Heritage, Rouge, Pioneer and Rockabilly. The jeans have a classic vintage feel to them and compliment Original Penguins collections of unpretentious, casual clothes perfectly. My favorites are Heritage (staight fit,slim leg) and Rockabilly (long rise, relaxed leg). Tiger of Sweden was one of my favorite labels as a teen. I especially loved a black velvet blazer I found in a secondhand shop in Tromsø. Wore it for years. This Autumn/Winter they give us a great collection filled with super wool coats, comfy suits and the now-finally-happening double breasted blazer. It´s all very british, very The Avengers (cult TV-Show, not the Marvel thing) and all very good. Drop the silly Bowler hat though..

I love this perfume from L´Occitane. The Verdon Eau de Toilette smell remind me of old-school grandpa scents with a fresh twist. Original Penguin is one of my absolute faves! They keep getting better and better and their Autumn/Winter 2011 collection has some amazing outerwear. The Speakeasy bar is the concept behind this collection and I love that "Bordwalk Empire" feeling it has. Personally I´m obsessed with this biker/aviator hybrid, but also dig the wool varsity jacket and the plaid coat.

"Forbidden Planet" is a sci-fi masterpiece and one of my all time favorite films. It stars Leslie Nielsen as the dashing and brave Commander Adams and will forever remind us of this great mans fantastic and long career as an actor. May he forever shine among the stars...

The Star Wars films are hugely influenced by "Forbidden Planet" and sadly Irvin Kershner, the director of my absolute favorite; "Star Wars Episode 5 - The Empire Strikes Back", passed away today also. His impact on generations of Star Wars fans is substantial , as he gave us the funniest, most romantic and dramatic film in the whole series. His commentary track on the DVD edition is superb and left me with the impression that Mr. Kershner was a funny and warmhearted man. May the force be with him always...

Bags are cool. I rarely leave the house without one. Sometimes all I carry is an apple and a book, other times I bring fresh clothes and a washbag for that night out I just know will go on till Monday. So when you get one, make sure it looks as good stuffed as it does half empty.

This winter it`s all about the canvas/leather/utility combo. For the gym, nylon is still the best way to go, but for the week-end make it a tough yet chic looking holdall. The alternative to the bag is the back-pack and in a crowded city nothing can beat it for practicality. The back-back is having a big "moment" these days, but if you´re over 30, try to find one that doesn`t make you look like a teenage wannabe. I´ll post a back-pack feature soon...

Lable whores no more??

Is de-brand the new re-brand? Well the anti label movement seems to suggest it is. Lately well known brands are de-branding themselves in the hope of attracting new followers or to keep the ones they are loosing in the battle against homegrown/locally produced/socially responsible/fair trade/insert your own politically correct shopping habit here. Starbucks have gone back to their roots and opened a no-logo coffee and tea shop, "inspired by Starbucks" in Seattle (read more here) and Absolut Vodka are releasing a no-logo edition of their iconic bottle. The Absolut Vodka campaign is aimed at adressing the issues of putting lables on a person because of their sexual habits (read more here). I´m not a big fan of sexual labels myself and applaud pop singer Mika for bringing up the issue.

I myself am trying to de-brand my own life. Peeling the label of household products often reveal a cool object and makes my bathroom shelf look a lot cleaner. When shopping I actually look for products with labels that are easy to peel off (impossible on a regular Absolut bottle. Believe me, I have tried). A company like Muji has the no logo aestethic as an important part of their design dogma and I love them for it. I also cut the labels from my clothes and it makes me feel like I own them and not the other way around, although I wonder if I would do that to a Dior jacket...

So where am I going with this? I don´t know.Maybe this guy does? I just know it´s a trend and a trend in need is a trend indeed!

And on the flipside of this trend is the opposite: Logo Overkill! I love this Lacoste shirt made entirely out of little crocodille logos by the wonderfull Fernando and Humberto Campana. Love it!

All the men on Planet Earth are dead except Yorick Brown. That's the story in Y: The Last Man, the fantastic graphic novel series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra.
Collected in 10 volumes and published by Vertigo, it is one of the best reads of my life! A strange epidemic leaves all men on earth dead and the women take over the planet. Sole survivor Yorick and his monkey (yes, his monkey..) set out on a journey to reunite him with his girlfriend. On the way they meet Israeli troops, crazy politicians and some seriously deranged amazons.... and that just in the first couple of issues. This is EPIC storytelling with a very serious and thought provoking undertone. A modern classic to be sure. A movie/tv show is soooo going to happen. Mark my words!

The book cover all sort of modern art accompanied by conversations between its authors. My good friend Admir Batlak (of Batlak & Selvig) told me so. And since he is genius, I believe him. So no surprises when I picked up the latest copy of Vogue Hommes International (BUY IT NOW!!!!!) and found the word "EROTIC" in shiny seductive letters on its hot cover. The issue is entirely devoted to the sexy and the erotic, focusing mainly on male sexuality. The focus on the male form and it´s hidden treasures has been an undercurrent trend for years now, and I think it will blow up now. This is a subject I will get into later, as it is of great interest to me. Watch this space...

TREND ALERT!! Well it´s been around for some time, but this Sprint (my new word for Spring. The freaky weather makes the equation Spring+Winter= Sprint, get it??) wear red! And I am not talking about RED products, but anything red. It´s a bold statement and will add instant flare to the monochrome wardrobe you got last year. Mix a red jacket with khaki trousers for that trendy Americana look. If you wanna go all the way, get a red trenchcoat and wear it Burberry Prorsum style.

Other castmembers include Ray Park (aka Darth Maul), Sienna Miller (aka Poor Little Rich Girl) and Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock aka The Scorpion King aka The Gay Bouncer). This is such a great look! Takashi Murakami (here at the opening of his retrospective at the Brooklyn Museum) is a cool and talented guy. You´ve probably seen his prints for Louis Vuitton. I love the way he wears the dotted shirt with the bow tie and a necklace. Love it. Have had my eyes on a shirt much like this for some time now and this picture proves to me I NEED IT ! and so do you....

Where The Wild Things Are

This was one of my favorite books when I was a kid. Could totally identify with main character Max. Since the toys from McFarl ane came out in 2000, it´s been buzzing in my head and now the movie is in post production. The film is directed by the wonderful Spike Jonze and was due out this coming May, but has now been pushed back to a October 2009 release. Rumors talk of Warner Bros worries that the film is to scary for kids and that reshoots are needed. I hope the outcome is true to Mr. Jonze´s vision, for he is truly a master.

This movie will have an impact. I just know it. So stay ahead and get the books, buy a t-shirt or display a figurine on your desk. It will make you look cool in a nostalgic kinda way!

As a young boy, I was a HUGE fan of New Kids on the Block. My room was covered in posters floor to ceiling. I made my mum make me the clothes they wore (she only put her foot down the time I wanted to wear my gold lamé shirt to school aged nine) and when me and my father went to see their show in 1992 , I was in heaven! I looked amazing in Doc Martens boots, black jeans and paisley print shirt and when Donnie ran back down from the stage after a failed attempt to reach me, dived over the girls between us and gave me a smile and a high five I felt like The Chosen One. Their style was amazing and their songs the best. The original boy band if you ask me.

They still look great (I especially like Jonathan Knight in his nylon jacket/blazer combo), but trendwise I recommend their earlier looks. Like in the video for You Got It (The Right Stuff) :

The first day of spring today! Sun and a chilly wind made me wear a white crisp shirt with a nice Kenzo tie (their A/W 08 collection is terrific!) under my black leather jacket. Paired with blue jeans and new white canvas sneakers I felt fresh and creative (a great combination for spring).
